Sex Education Failure?

I heard a statistic on WLS-AM a Local radio station here, owned by ABC yesterday. It scared me quite a bit. When I was in High School they spend time on Abstinence Education and Safe Sex Education, both of them were given time. They did tell us not to have sex until marriage. They did tell us about condoms, but not how to use them. Which I think is ridiculous. I remembered when I got home that day I looked condoms up on the internet, and how to use them. I got so many porno sites it was ridiculous. It’s almost like if you want to teach about sex, you have to do it carefully. You must teach things that maybe the Christian right doesn’t want you to teach.

The statistic I heard was this, out of Sex Ed. As I remember them, and the specific numbers don’t matter that much. Just the idea they show. That’s what I remember the most. Classes some 98% teach Abstinence, 50% teach about Safe Sex, and 30% teach about how to use a condom. So almost all teach Abstinence, the mighty goal of don’t have sex before marriage. I had probably a group of 12 friends back in high school. Abstinence Ed. worked on only one, at least to this day. We will see if it continues to work. The rest of the 11 had to figure out for themselves the nuts and bolts of Safe Sex. It was a MIRACLE that no one got pregnant. If any one of them was just a little bit lazier we would have had an issue.

I have more to say, but not for the front page:

The point I’m getting to is this. If 11/12 people end up enjoying sex before marriage (which I’m sure is not the national statistic.) I’m sure my upbringing is different because of the liberal town I grew up in, and only half get safe sex ed, and of that half you have people like us who were not taught HOW to have safe sex just that it existed, there’s a high rate of accident.

It just seems like there’s quite a bit of danger here. Why take the risk. We should teach not only safe sex but how to have it, I think.
