So this is the page that’s all about me (Zero).
So, my name is Joe. I’m done with school now and out looking for a job in this economy. That’s not an easy task I’m finding. I’m looking to start my own business building websites and hosting websites under the Umbrella of the Tech help website TwoTechies.net. I am also a proud Eagle Scout from Troop 63 in River Forest Il. (since disbanded). I am also happily gay. =D
I enjoy video games and play EVE-Online. I’m a proud member of the corporation BIG. I love the Zelda games and the Final Fantasy Games. Racing games are always fun too. =D
So here’s where my problems begin, My three favorite things to discuss are all non starters…. Computers, Politics & Religion. It makes me somewhat awkward in social situations. Not because I don’t understand, but because I don’t ever have much to talk about. I love my computer and my blog.
I’m very into politics. I consider myself an Independent and a Moderate. I fall right on most economic issues. I think the Republicans have it right for money. But the Democrats have it right on social issues. Gays should be able to have unions (civil unions), but I do oppose gay marriage. Now here the big thing: I have no problem with flip-floppers, here’s why. They are open to arguments against them. They are able to be convinced they are wrong. As long as the argument is well thought out there should be no problem with someone being convinced they are wrong. Politics for me is a somewhat dirty issues because people get clouded by their emotions. Most things for me are a logical Issue (religion including) and if that were the case there should be no reason why people cannot have a discussion about politics or religion.
Onto religion: I think religion as a whole is a good thing, Even Islam. Let me preempt with I do agree that terrorism is bad. This is why religion is a non-starter: Every time you start talking about it logically, you piss people off. Al Quida is an EXTREMIST GROUP. Anytime a religion becomes extreme it makes it not fit into this world, in my opinion. Ok, I call myself a Unitarian Universalist Elementalist. Why am I that? I spent many years researching every religion I could get my fingers on. Even Islam, I could not agree with many things in Islam but I learn to appreciate it is a real religion. As long as they don’t break law or take it too far it’s a good religion. I started as a Pagan/Wiccan a while ago (which is NOT Satanism). I dedicated myself as a Pagan on October 31st 2003 and took Zero as my magical name. Then I started looking for a church that would accept me for who I am. I landed at Unity Temple which is a Unitarian Universalist Congregation. I became a member with them on April 6th 2008. They embrace me for who I am and I love it.
So why Zero? I chose to take Zero as my magical name for the properties of how it can destroy reality. Magic to some people can destroy reality for me it works with reality. Zero can do the same thing to mathematics, it can destroy it, but it opens many doors of possibility. Before Zero there was only addition and subtraction, multiplication, things you can measure. You can’t have zero of something… that would be nothing. But here is the power Zero has to destroy logic and mathematics… you have to be very careful around zero.
This is from the book Zero: The Biography of a Dangerious Idea by Charles Seife
Let a and b each be equal to 1. Since a and b are equal,
b2 = ab
Since a equals itself, it’s obvious that
a2 = a2
Subtract equation 1 from equation 2. This yields
a2 – b2 = a2 – ab
We can factor both sides of the equation; a2 – ab equals a(a – b). Likewise a2 – b2 equals (a + b)(a – b). (Nothing fishy is going on here. This statement is perfectly true. Plug in the numbers and see for yourself!) Substituting into equation 3 we get,
(a + b)(a – b) = a(a – b)
So far, so good. Now divide both sides of the equation by (a – b) and we get
a + b = a
Subtract a from both sides and we get
b = 0
But we set b to 1 at the very beginning of this proof, so this means that…
1 = 0
What is wrong with this proof? There is only one step that is flawed, and that is the one where we go from equation 4 to equation 5. We divide by a - b. But look out. Since a and b are both equal to 1, a - b = 1 – 1 = 0. We have divided by zero, and we get the ridiculous statement that 1 = 0. From there we can prove any statement in the universe, whether it is true or false. The whole framework of mathematics has exploded in our faces.
Used unwisely, Zero has the power to destroy logic.
Magic and Zero I see much the same way. They can be dangerous used improperly, however, they are very helpful when used properly. And that’s why I took the name Zero as my magical name. I use Zero as an online alias as well. If Zero is taken where I go I use ZeroOP.
Well, that’s a little about me. I’ll keep updating this as the days/weeks/years go on in my life.
